Forging Your Path: Leadership Lessons for Aspiring Managers

Writer: Coy LeBron PoitierCoy LeBron Poitier

Introduction:

So, you're looking to step up and take on a leadership role? Congratulations! It's a journey filled with challenges, growth, and the immense satisfaction of guiding a team towards success. But where do you start? How do you transition from being a valued team member to a respected and effective manager?

As someone who has dedicated my career to fostering heritage and outreach, I've learned that leadership isn't just about giving orders; it's about inspiring, empowering, and building strong relationships. Whether it's connecting communities to the rich history of the Buffalo Soldiers or guiding a team through a project, the principles remain the same.

Key Leadership Insights:

  1. Cultivate Self-Awareness:

    • Before leading others, you must understand yourself. What are your strengths? Your weaknesses? Your values?

    • Reflect on your past experiences. What leadership qualities have you admired? What pitfalls have you observed?

    • Understanding your own leadership style will help you build authenticity and connect with your team more effectively.

  2. Communicate with Clarity and Empathy:

    • Effective communication is the cornerstone of leadership. Be clear, concise, and consistent in your messaging.

    • More importantly, listen actively and empathetically. Understand your team's perspectives, concerns, and needs.

    • Remember, leadership is about building relationships, and strong relationships are built on open and honest communication.

  3. Empower and Delegate:

    • A good manager doesn't micromanage. They empower their team members to take ownership of their work.

    • Delegate tasks effectively, providing clear expectations and support.

    • Trust your team's abilities and give them the space to grow and develop.

  4. Lead by Example:

    • Your actions speak louder than words. Demonstrate the qualities you want to see in your team.

    • Be accountable, responsible, and committed to your goals.

    • Show integrity and respect in all your interactions.

  5. Embrace Continuous Learning:

    • Leadership is a lifelong journey of learning and growth.

    • Seek out mentors, attend workshops, and read books on leadership.

    • Be open to feedback and continuously strive to improve your skills.

    • Remember, even when working with Historical information, there is always room to learn, and grow.

  6. Build a Culture of Inclusion:

    • Just as I work to bring diverse communities to the parks, a good leader works to bring diverse ideas to the team.

    • Value every team member's unique perspective and create an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and respected.

    • A diverse team is a strong team.

From My Experience:

In my work with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's Buffalo Soldiers Heritage and Outreach Program, I've seen firsthand the power of leadership to inspire change and build strong communities. The principles of effective leadership are universal, whether you're leading a historical preservation effort or a corporate team.

Call to Action:

Ready to take the next step in your leadership journey? Start by focusing on these key principles. Remember, leadership is not a title; it's an action. It's about making a positive impact and empowering others to reach their full potential.
